Are Your Kids Doing The Bird Box Challenge?

The new year begins with a new viral meme. Netflix issued a warning on Twitter that had followers tittering about parental advisory. The streaming site was concerned that people around the world were now taking on the #BirdBoxChallenge, inspired by the Netflix original movie, Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock.

The warning read:

Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.

The film is a supernatural thriller that has main characters walk around blindfolded, to avoid seeing the creature, that could result in their insanity. Much like the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets, that results in death to those who dare look it in the eye.

Closer home, we had the wildly successful Andhadhun, [spoiler] with the protagonist both pretending to be blind as well being actually blinded in different parts of the movie - with the challenge of going about his routine with no eyesight.

Whatever be the inspiration, the #birdboxchallenge seems harmless and fun enough indoors - but with potential for harm. Do be careful and as always, take care!
